Living Lands: Fort William Henry- Moments in Time

Join the Lake George Land Conservancy for our Living Lands summer presentation series. Each week, we will take an exclusive and up-close look at the people, history and wildlife of the lands of Lake George and the Adirondacks, past and present. This week will be focused on the history of Fort William Henry. Maritime archaeologist Joseph W. Zarzynski will present a PPT talk, “Fort William Henry–Moments in Time,” which happens to be the title of his forthcoming book due out in the summer 2023. Fort William Henry, a French & Indian War (1755–1763) fortress at the south end of Lake George, is largely known to Americans because of its role in the 1826 historical novel, The Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper. The book was later made into several movies by that name. The British frontier garrison on the shores of Lake George, New York, only lasted from 1755 to 1757. Nonetheless, its grounds have had a remarkable history. It was the locale of seasonal occupations of prehistoric Indigenous Peoples, a colonial military stronghold, three luxury hotels, a terminus for the Delaware & Hudson railroad, and since 1954, a popular museum.
